With decades of experience, advanced technology, and abundant natural resources, China Stone Industry has grown in a fast speed, Now China has become a top player in the production and export of stone products.
The stone industry is one of the world’s oldest trades, with roots stretching back tens of thousands of years. In South Africa, evidence of stone tool creation, known as microliths, dates back around 60,000 to 70,000 years. Ancient civilizations like Egypt were already mining granite and marble for their iconic structures. Later, crushed stone became a key material for road-building empires, including ancient Greece and Rome. From tools to temples to roads, stone has played a vital role in human history and development.
The international stone industry has seen remarkable growth over the last 20 to 30 years. Since 1990, global stone production has grown by an average of 7.3% each year, while trade volume has increased by 9.2% annually. These growth rates outpace many other industries, showing that the stone sector is expanding faster than the global economy as a whole.
In China, stone production is concentrated in three key regions: Fujian Province and Guangdong Province in the south, and Shandong Province in the east. Fujian and Shandong are known for their raw material extraction and processing, while Guangdong specializes in processing imported stone. Together, these three provinces contribute 85% of China’s total stone production, with a focus on marble and granite products. This regional specialization has made China a major player in the global stone market.

Stone Classification
China’s domestic consumption of stone is mainly divided into three parts:
1. The internal and external decorative panels of buildings, which is the largest part of stone use;
2. Construction stones, including garden and engineering stones;
3. Stone carvings, stone artworks, tombstone stone products, etc.
The largest amount of stone is used for architectural decoration.
China’s stone market is booming, driven by rising demand and growing opportunities. This has attracted international stone businesses to invest in the country, while domestic companies are also stepping up, consolidating resources, and competing actively in the market. As a result, China’s stone industry is increasingly becoming a central player on the global stage. It’s no longer just a participant—it’s a vital force in the international stone market. In the coming years, the global center for stone production and trade is expected to shift from Europe to Asia, with China leading the way.
China Stone Industry Development History
Between 1979 and 1995, China’s stone industry achieved its first major leap forward.
The following 15 years, starting in 1996, marked the industry’s second leap. These transformative changes were fueled by China’s reform and opening-up policies, particularly the significant progress made between 1981 and 1995. This period taught us valuable lessons:
1. China’s stone industry must embrace reform, prioritize technology, and build strong brands.
2. It should focus on forming enterprise groups to achieve large-scale production, integrate advanced technology into exploration, mining, and processing, and strengthen environmental awareness to protect resources.
3. At the same time, the industry must look outward, connect with global markets, compete internationally, and expand exports to secure its place on the world stage.
China’s Stone Production Bases and Varieties
China has developed four major stone production hubs, each known for its unique and high-quality stone varieties:
1. Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi Coastal Areas
Famous for “Cenxi Red” granite from Cenxi City, Guangxi.
2. Shandong’s Jiaodong Peninsula
Known for “Shidao Red” granite from Rongcheng City.
3. Border of Hebei, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia (Taihang Mountain Area)
Produces varieties like “Yanshan Blue,” “Fengzhen Black,” “Fuping Black,” “Yixian Black,” and “Taibai Blue” granite.
4. Ya’an Area in Western Sichuan
Home to “China Red,” “Panxi Blue” granite, and “Asian White” marble.
Beyond these four hubs, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is emerging as a fifth major production area. Xinjiang boasts vast stone resources, with deposits found in over half of its counties. The region has more than 50 marble mines (700 million m³ reserves) and 40 granite mines (400 million m³ reserves). Experts predict Xinjiang will soon become a key player in China’s stone industry.
China’s stone varieties are not only abundant but also world-class. Precious stones like “Tianshan Blue,” “China Red,” “Yanshan Blue,” “Shidao Red,” “White Marble,” and “Yunnan White” rival international brands such as Clara White, Indian Red, and Brazilian Blue. These varieties have gained global recognition, attracting foreign investors from Italy, the U.S., Germany, Japan, and other countries to open mines and build factories in China.
